How a narrative is constructed. What happens when a film cannot be made. What remains of an actor once they are gone. Through the documentary, Shackleton questions reality, pushing it to its limits only to dismantle it. The programme brings together Beyond Clueless (2014), The Afterlight (2021) —screened from the only existing 35mm print—, a session of five essayistic short films CONVERSATIONS IN A PUB. Five video essays by Charile Shackleton and Zodiac Killer Project (2025), winner of the NEXT Innovator Award at Sundance. A three-day workshop exploring how to transform the constraints of cinema into creative opportunities.
Charlie Shackleton (London, 1991) situates his practice on the fringes of documentary. The essay becomes form, the archive transforms into narrative, and the limitations of the medium cease to be obstacles, instead taking centre stage in the film. For a week, La Casa Encendida is hosting a programme that explores his work through four screenings and a workshop, as part of Documenta Madrid.
